More Eifel pictures from the 5th of August

Wannen Eiterkopfe

A complex location with deposits from varies different places. 200 ka

Closer view of the end of the section. Some of the layers are more distinct. This is the thinning end of the deposit.

Different angle on the beds.

View of the area between two cones. In this area sediments become trapped and form “cover bed series”. This is just visible in the photo.

Detail of the outcrop.

Hansa Quarry

An example of a blue hauyne crystal (pr. how-een). Bigger and better examples were also found.

View of the quarry. The Niedermendiger lava flow (just less than 12.9 ka) has been quarried for many centuries for use as millstones. These were sold all over Europe and even exported to the USA, because of the qualities of the stone.

Vulkan Eifel Museum visit

A view of the inside of the underground quarry. This part is open to visitors, who are given a guided tour.

The ceiling of the underground quarry. The cracks are the cooling joints formed in the Niedermendiger lava. The columns of cooled lava thicken downwards. Somehow (?) this prevented the blocks from falling out.
