More Eifel pictures from the 4th of August

Photos and text by Kirsty Crocket

Auf Dickel Quarry

The only wet day of the week. Reaching the outcrop required walking along the edges of fields and battling through some small trees/shrubs.

View of part of the outcrop, which was very varied.

Examination of the outcrop face. We were told some very large sanidine crystals could be found here. Our trip leader had previously found one that weighed 2 kg.

View looking up at the face.

Photo stop

The information board at a photo stop to look at the maars in the vicinity.

The Weinfelder Maar.

The Schalkenmehrener Maar.

Leyendecker Quarry

Looking for mantle nodules in the quarry. The nodules are covered by the orange coloured mineral idingsite which is the weathered product on the outside of the nodules.

Layering in the outcrop.

An opened nodule (small example). The bright green colour of olivine is very recognisable.

An out of focus close up of the opened nodule.

View of layers in the quarry face.

Wider view of layers in quarry face.

Mountain goat.

Road

Manderscheid Castle viewed from the road.

Devonian schists in a road cutting.

Close up of the Devonian schists. This is material that we kept coming across during the week. It was often incorporated in the volcanic deposits where the eruption had started at a level below ground equivalent to the depth at which the Devonian schists were buried at the time of eruption.

Vulkan Eifel Museum

Wine tasting session with Heinz Lempert, the owner of the Vulkan Eifel Museum in Mendig.
