CROATIAN KALEIDOSCOPE
3-10 June 2007

Dr. Jasenka Sremac, Zagreb, will be showing us some of the geological gems of her country during this week-long trip.

Programme:

3.6.2007. Arrival in Zagreb
Optional walking tour around Zagreb in the afternoon

STOPS

1st day (4.6.2007.):

  1. Rastoke – water mills, national heritage
  2. Plitvice lakes – national park, karst phenomena, recent fresh-water sedimentation, Triassic stromatolites, Jurassic shallow-marine deposits
  3. Udbina – geological settings of the Velebit Mt. and Lika region
  4. Starigrad-Paklenica (Hotel Rajna)

2nd day (5.6.2007.)

  1. Paklenica national park – geomorphology,  Permian/Triassic boundary, Mesozoic carbonate rocks, traces of Quarternary glaciation.
  2. Jablanac – Zavratnica – bay, protected landscape (geomorphology)
  3. Rab (Hotel Pio)

3rd day (6.6.2007.)

  1. Lopar – models of recent peritidal deposition (recent stromatolites, sand dunes, tidal flats), Eocene estuarine clastic deposits - sedimentology
  2. Supetarska Draga  - Eocene – sedimentology
  3. Rab (Hotel Pio)

4th day (7.6.2007.)

  1. Road Jablanac – Senj – submarine springs
  2. Senj – fortress, national heritage
  3. Senjska Draga – magmatic rocks
  4. Novi Vinodolski – Eocene syncline with clastic deposits, nice view of the tectonics of the area, famous vinyards, national heritage
  5. Opatija – the oldest European high-class touristic place (Hotel Opatija)

5th day (8.6.2007.)

  1. Labin – old mine - Tertiary coals, Cretaceous – Tertiary transgression
  2. Pula – Ancient Roman architecture, dinosaur footprints
  3. Kirmenjak – active quarry with Jurassic limestone, known from Roman times, stilolites, sedimentology.
  4. Poreč – national heritage, recent lagoons
  5. Červar-Porat – dinosaur footprints
  6. Kaštelir (Farm)

6th day (9.6.2007.)

  1. Cave Baredine
  2. Motovun – artists colony, film festival
  3. Hum – the smallest city in the world
  4. Učka – overthrust structure (Cretaceous-Tertiary), road tunnel
  5. Lokve – accumulation lake , Palaeozoic rocks, old barite mines
  6. Zagreb (Hotel Central)

10.6.2007. Deparature from Zagreb

The trip includes the above-mentioned programme, transport, bed and breakfast on twin room basis, picnic lunches, three evening meals and entrance fees. The flight is not included (Croatia Airlines has a good offer from London Heathrow).
